ADVANCED FLIGHT REVIEWS

Advanced Flight Reviews are required for pilots seeking the Transport Canada Advanced Pilot Certificate to operate in controlled airspace, near or over people, and in urban or built-up areas. It evaluates a pilot’s ability to plan and conduct safe operations, apply aviation regulations, and manage in-flight emergencies.
Successful completion confirms the pilot is prepared for professional drone missions within Canada’s regulatory framework.

LEVEL 1 COMPLEX FLIGHT REVIEWS

Level 1 Complex Flight Reviews are required for pilots operating larger RPAS (over 25 kg), Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), or conducting higher-risk missions. It tests a pilot’s ability to plan and execute complex operations safely, with a focus on airspace coordination, crew management, and emergency procedures.

Successful completion demonstrates readiness to handle demanding commercial or specialized drone applications in compliance with Transport Canada regulations.

Note: Transport Canada allows direct completion of the TC Level 1 Complex (L1C) Flight Review while only holding a Basic drone license. This means you can complete your Level 1 Complex Flight Review, to earn both your Advanced and Level 1 Complex certificates

REVIEW SITES

Our flight review sites are located across the province. Regardless of if your selected review site is in controlled airspace, our instructors will have you plan a simulated mission that is.

Our review sites are able to accommodate a wide range of commercial and industrial unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs) including small, medium, and large RPAS with both vertical takeoff and landing capabilities or those requiring a runway surface or launch/recovery system.

Review sites are broken down by RPAS size:
Small (250g – 25kg), Medium (25kg – 150kg), and Large (150kg +)

And Landing Configuration:
VTOL (Vertical TakeOff and Landing) or Runway/Launcher takeoff or recovery

The majority of commercial drones are Small VTOL, our teams offer specialized sites for larger commercial and industrial systems.

Customer Review Sites

Alternatively we can conduct your flight review on a property or in a city which you select.

We can also suit your planning mission to an actual mission you are needing to perform such as a manually flown photography, videography, LiDAR, Thermal, or inspection flight.

Properties outside of the corporate limits of our standard review sites will be charged milage at a rate stated in our MFC fees and tariffs.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The RPAS Advanced and Level 1 Complex (L1C) Flight Reviews are structured similarly to a Pilot’s Flight Review. There will be both a preflight interview and a practical flight portion of the review.

Mandatory Documentation (can be digital)

As Outlined in TRANSPORT CANADA FLIGHT REVIEWER’S GUIDE (TP-15395) and the Canadian Air Regulations part IX the remote pilot candidate must arrive at the flight review with the following:

  • Government Issued Photo ID
  • Transport Canada Basic Certificate
  • A Registered Advanced RPAS
*Registration MUST be clearly labeled on the RPA
** Don’t own an advanced RPAS yet? Contact Us about our rental units.
  • Current Aviation Charts and Canadian Flight Supplement
*FltPlan Go is a free app with both VNCs and CFS
  • Successful Written Exam Results (Over 80%)

Recommended Documentation (can be digital):

  • Manufacturer Pilot Operations Handbook (POH) or manual
  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Emergency Checklists
  • Any pre prepared notes, maps, or information about our simulated or actual flight review location

The Preflight Interview

Before going out to site, we will meet to check your required documents, verify your ID, and discuss your flight plan.

We will also discuss all the topics covered on the Pre-Flight Planning and Emergency Procedures sections of the TRANSPORT CANADA FLIGHT REVIEWER’S GUIDE (TP-15395). This discussion will include airspace, local air routes and aerodromes, obstructions, terrain features, aircraft weight and balance, NOTAMs, and weather information.

It is up to the candidate to make the “go/no-go” decision, this must be based on available information for the flight.

The Flight

Once on site the candidate will conduct a site survey, informing the flight reviewer of any hazards they see and how they plan to mitigate them.

After the site survey is completed, launch and recovery positions along with departure and approach routes can be finalized.

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to manually control their aircraft. This includes a manual take off and departure, the ability to maintain a stable airspeed/heading/altitude, to navigate around an obstacle or a fixed point, and a manual landing in a prespecified location.

*We recommend performing a [“Positive Control Check” Link to flight training #Positive-Control-Check] at a safe altitude after takeoff

During the flight, the remote pilot candidate should be able to:

  • judge the distance and height/position of the RPA,
  • judge the distance and height/position of obstacles,
  • adjust heading and direction to compensate for wind,
  • maintain an active scan for air traffic, obstacles, or avians
  • monitor the battery or fuel level to ensure arrival at the designated landing site.
  • Perform a safe and controlled landing

HOW TO PREPARE

Be experienced in the operation of your aircraft. Find a nice location away from people and airports to practice flying your RPAS under your Basic license.

Be familiar with part IX of the Canadian Aviation Regulations.
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact one of our RPAS instructors at RPAS@FLYMITCHINSON.COM or Book a Flight Review Pre-Flight Preparation Session as outlined below.

Know your emergency procedures.
What should you do in the event of a fly away?
How do you report an incident and to whom?
What is classed as a reportable incident?
What should you do in the event of a battery fire?

If you work with an observer or payload operator, know what you should brief them on before a mission and what their responsibilities should be.

Know what hazards to look for during a site survey.
Think of methods to mediate risks such as power lines, interference, nearby roadways, and other airspace users.

Be able to determine what type of airspace you are in, and if it is controlled, who controls it.
Know where to look up the standard procedures for an aerodrome, and be able to interpret how they relate to your mission.
