VFR Over the Top Rating

This endorsement allows the pilot to fly under VFR conditions above the clouds using the cloud below as reference rather than the earths surface. This course consists of instrument flying and more detailed weather analysis training. Pilots who hold a CPL or an IR automatically have the VOTT endorsement.

Course Length

Anticipate 1 week if full-time, 3 weeks if part-time.

Transport Canada Requirements

  • Must hold a PPL;
  • Minimum 15 hours instrument, 5 hours instrument from PPL can be counted;
  • No written exam required.


Note: The above training requirements represent TC minimums. It may take some students more time to complete depending on ability or if training flights are not consistently scheduled and flown.

Flying Breakdown

In our experience, most students take more than the Transport Canada requirements to complete their license and our cost estimates reflect the average student’s flight hour requirements.
